Playing outside

6 weeks old and they love playing outside in the snow. It is hard to get them to come back into the house. Springtime can't come soon enough for me but the pups haven't a care about the weather at all.

Diana and her Pyr Shep "Jinn"

I love hearing updates from everyone and I wanted to share in Diana's excitement.
Hi Susan, We had lots of excitement this weekend! We went to an Odor Recognition Test on Saturday in Milton, TN and on Sunday went to a NADAC trial in Murfreesboro, TN. Both locations are about 50 mins from our home. The ORT was for Anise certification, which is required in order for dogs participating in nosework competitions to be allowed to enter the second level of testing. Chinook and Jinn were both entered and Chinook was to go first. I have not really been doing Anise that long with either dog, but as the test was so close to home, it seemed a great opportunity to give it a try. The dogs are given 3 minutes to determine which of 12 identical boxes contains the Q-tip with one drop of the odor on it. Chinook found it in 14.12 seconds and, as you can imagine, I was delighted. A little later the course was re-set and it was Jinn's turn to go. Jinn is generally a much more methodical searcher than Chinook is and tends, in competitions, to take his foot off the gas pedal a little in order to make sure that no mistakes are made (he is quite the little perfectionist!). To my great surprise, when Jinn caught sight of the boxes, he went to work even faster than Chinook did and found his odor box in 7.93 seconds. Needless to say, I was floating around on cloud nine for the rest of the day! As you may remember, Jinn participated in his first real agility trial in early December. It was a NADAC trial and he did really, really well, earning two standard Qs and two jumpers Qs as well as his novice tunnelers title. Initially, I was rather disappointed that the ORT was scheduled for the same weekend as the NADAC trial was and thought it might just be too much dashing around to try and do the ORT on Saturday and the NADAC trial on Sunday. But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to give it a go, so I entered Jinn in four runs on Sunday: jumpers, two standard runs, and one tunnelers run (his first ever open level course). Chinook was entered in tunnelers only because although agility is not really his sport, he LOVES running tunnelers courses. Well, we had the most marvelous time and I am so glad that I decided not to forgo the trial. Jinn Qd in all four of his runs with first place finishes in everything and his tunnelers time was almost as fast as Chinook's and that meant that Jinn ran the second fastest tunnelers time among open dogs overall. What a thrill that was! In addition, Jinn's jumpers time was the fastest of all the novice dogs entered in all jump heights -- he ran 5.63YPS! Chinook also came first in his tunnelers division, so we came home with five qualifying ribbons each of which had a blue ribbon attached to it. Going into the trial, Jinn needed one jumpers Q and one standard Q to finish his novice jumpers (NJC) and novice standard (NAC) titles. So, in addition to everything else, Jinn also presented me with two new agility titles. I think I gave Jinn exactly the right name --- he really is a Little Wizard! I have uploaded Jinn's title runs in jumpers and standard, as well as his open tunnelers run on You Tube. If you compare these runs with his jumpers and standard runs from the December trial, you will see just how much his confidence and speed has increased. In practice, Jinn swims through the weaves quite a bit faster than he does in the trial and he also gives me a much faster dog walk with a dramatic drop into a down at the end of the board. In the trial setting he is not able to do that for me yet. But that will come as his confidence builds. I think he is running at about 80% of his top speed now (whereas before I think he was giving me around 65-70%). I am just amazed how much he has improved between the two trials. Here are the YouTube links of our little wizard: Novice Jumpers title run: http://youtu.be/XtgMLwdVD1k Novice Standard title run: http://youtu.be/uiJ7dFWXK1M First Open Tunnelers run: http://youtu.be/-T3CmEdnv5I It is a beautiful day here today, crisp and sunny, so I am going to take the dogs out for a run. Blessings, Diana
